AFG Brings Mobile Laboratory to Neglected Regions of Coastal Guinea

LaboMobil© comes to Guinea to improve rapid disease diagnosis and data collection in hard-to-reach areas.

Conakry, Guinea (PRBuzz.com) Monday, January 28, 2013 – An inauguration ceremony took place on December 11, 2012 at the People’s Palace to welcome AFG’s Labomobil© to Guinea. The Labomobil©, developed and built by Agence de Medecine Preventive (AMP), is a fully functional mobile laboratory mounted on a 4×4 Toyota Hilux, equipped to perform quality microbiological analyses and especially manufactured to face the hardships of tropical climate and African suburban roads. This allows the vehicle to access the most remote places in rural Guinea. Lack of epidemiological data is a prevailing concern in most of West Africa; without accurate information about diseases and strains, effective and timely treatment is virtually impossible. This project has been developed by AFG, with the assistance and guidance of AMP, to improve rapid diagnosis of epidemics and enhance laboratory surveillance and health monitoring in neglected areas of Coastal Guinea. The Labomobil©, the first of its kind in Guinea, will allow trained technicians to visit remote areas to properly diagnose contagious, deadly diseases, and gather data. It will also provide support for outlying laboratories, assisting with personnel training, equipment maintenance, facility modernization and information distribution. AFG has put together a multi-disciplinary team to oversee the project; members of the team include representatives from the National Institute of Public Health, the National Reference Laboratory and the National Pharmacy and Laboratory Directors, as well as AFG and AMP staff members. The Minister of Health, Dr.  Lama, spoke on behalf of the Guinea’s President, Alpha Conde, thanking AFG for its contribution to the health of the people of Guinea, saying “I’m honored to receive this precious tool on behalf of the Government and the population of Guinea, because we can’t speak of a good treatment of diseases without a good diagnosis”
